About Montenegro

With an area of just 13,812 km² and a population of around 662,000, Montenegro may be small in size but beautiful.

From its beautiful seaside and ancient towns like Kotor, Herceg Novi and Budva, to world-renowned national parks, Montenegro is unique and offers an excellent vacation.

Bay, Mountains and Towns

What sets Montenegro apart from most Balkan or European countries is the possibility for tourists to experience the beauty of the beaches and the sea, as well as the fresh mountain air, in one day. If you are wondering how? You can spend the morning on the beaches in the Bay of Kotor, and have dinner at over 1,000 meters above sea level in Lovcen or Zabljak.

The Bay of Kotor, often called Europe's southernmost fjord, is a true phenomenon. The cliffs rise from the sea, creating breathtaking views that have earned it a spot on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The charming towns that line the bay, such as Perast and Kotor, are filled with historic architecture influenced by the Venetian golden age.

Montenegro is a popular tourist destination

Montenegro has set its sights on becoming one of the world's premier tourist destinations, and it's easy to see why. With an average of 260 sunny days per year and a sea bathing season that lasts 180 days, Montenegro is a paradise for sun-seekers and beach lovers.

But Montenegro isn't just about the coast. For outdoor enthusiasts, with five stunning national parks that offer hiking, biking, rafting, zip-line and skiing opportunities. Durmitor National Park, home to the Tara River Canyon (the deepest canyon in Europe), is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Europe.

Car rentals in Podgorica are available for those looking to explore Montenegro at their own pace. With a rental car, you can easily drive between the seaside and the mountains, discovering hidden gems.

Some interesting facts about Montenegro

  • The country has 117 beaches along its 293 km of coastline
  • The largest lake in the Balkans, Skadar Lake, is located mostly in Montenegro
  • The Tara River Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon
  • Montenegro declared itself the world's first ecological state in 1991
